The Rio de Janeiro carnival of 2011 is in full swing and pictures have started to crop on websites and forums all over the web. For the people that don’t know the Rio de Janeiro carnival is one of the most famous and colourful carnivals in the world, which is a four-day long celebration that takes place 40 days before Easter. It’s thought that the carnival attracts 500,00 visitors each year and starts on a Saturday and finishes on fat Tuesday with the beginning of lent on Ash Wednesday. The music that you can expect to be hear at the carnival is predominately samba, famous for slow rhythms and melodic tones. The most famous Carnival bands are:

• Cordão do Bola Preta – one of the most traditional bands parading downtown
• Banda de Ipanema marches on three separate days in Ipanema, followed by a huge crowd with lots of gay revellers
• Suvaco do Cristo parades in the Botanic Garden District, right below Christ-the Redeemer statue’s arm. The name in English translates to “Christ’s armpit”, and was chosen for that very reason
• Carmelitas was supposedly created by nuns but in fact it is just an allegory of the band. It parades in the hills of Santa Teresa.

The pictures that come back from carnival every year are always packed full of colour as people that parade at the carnival are always dressed in the most wonderful costumes that you can think of! It has been reported on twitter this week that it was Bart Simpson’s 32nd birthday and we thought that the legendary character needed a mention on our blog. Similarly to all the other characters on the show, troublesome Bart hasn’t aged at all in the 22-year history of the show. Bart’s always been aged 10, which, if he aged like a normal human being, would make Bart 32 years old this week. However Bart’s date of birth has never been revealed by the show makers, which lead us to question how this celebratory day, and topic of conversation came about? The show debuted on Fox Dec. 17, 1989, which is over 22 years ago, quite a feat by the programme makers! Can anyone shed some light on this topic of conversation?

If you’re anything like us then you will love the Simpsons! A show adored by children and adults everywhere we would like to take this moment to take out hats off the makers of the show for providing us with 22 years of laughter. Not only is the show popular but our officially licensed overhead Simpson masks have been popular sellers for years. We stock all the classic character masks and costumes from the show which are available to purchase from our website. If you fancy celebrating Bart’s birthday then check out our cool Bart Simpson overhead mask!

A month or so ago we were all excited about the news of the Royal Wedding between William and Kate to be held on April 29th. We were even happier when they announced that the day would be a public holiday, so many are making a real occasion out of the day! We’ve now found out that some towns and cities are planning street parties to celebrate the event and that some of them are theming the day! The first city we’ve heard to be holding a street party is Cardiff. With a royal wedding this street party is determined to make it that bit more special ditching vol-au-vents in exchange for a hog roast. The street party have set a "Medieval" theme for the event which signifies the royal family through the ages: Victoria Park Pub off Cowbridge Road East have already contacted to the council regarding their quest to obtain permission for the event.

Julie Cornock, assistant manager, said: "We are about to put flyers through all the doors in the street just to let them know we will be closing it off for the street party, so they have an opportunity to let us know if they have any objections. …we are selling tickets for it because as you can understand we need funding. We will see how much money we get, to see if we can have street entertainers. We are looking for sponsors, we get quite a few businesses that come to drink here….the Royal Family have gone on years and years – everyone has always celebrated a royal wedding so we just thought it would be nice to go back in time."

Canton councillor Ramesh Patel said: "We have had several street parties in Canton over the years. We have always supported them in the past, I think it’s a great way to get the whole community together. I won’t be going in medieval dress but I would be happy to attend." (Source).

We stock loads of medieval costumes for men and women, which will be ideal for celebrating the street parties. We even do royal costumes along with facemasks such as prince Charles and Camilla, so if you want to get behind the occasion, our fancy dress masks are ideal.

Is anyone planning on organising a street party for the royal wedding? If so let us know your plans and we might mention it on one of our blog posts.

Fancy dress mask anyone to celebrate the big day?

Halloween is the biggest date in the fancy dress calendar and is the third biggest celebrated event in the UK after Christmas and Easter. Much of our time throughout the year is spent preparing for the Halloween rush, which includes a range of activities. Buying in deranged Halloween fancy dress and accessories is one of our main tasks which means we have to spend weeks and weeks communicating with our various suppliers all around the world to bring you the most cutting edge lines. Our warehouse manager also has a big job on his hands as he spends the month of August and September preparing the warehouse to make it more efficient than ever. As Halloween approaches we hire a large volume of temp staff to help us in meeting Halloween demand. This year is no exception and we now have all of our office and warehouse staff trained up and working away busy sending your orders and taking your phone calls.

Fancy dress masks and accessories made a massive impact last year with 15% increase in the volume of items sold. This year we have listened to our customers who have told us they would like to see an increase in some of our gruesome accessories such as fake blood and fangs. This year we have added around thirty additional pieces to help gore up your outfit or occasion.

So if you have any suggestions why not get in touch?
