The success story of the Harry Potter franchise continues as it has just been revealed that the recent release of the new Harry Potter film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ has already reached sales in excess of $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It’s expected that the film will soon surpass the powerhouse movie Pirates of the Caribbean: “On Stranger Tides” that stars Hollywood A lister Johnny Depp, which is this year’s top grossing film at $1.03 billion. The newest film of the Harry Potter series will become only the ninth film to achieve the sales landmark, which in English pounds is in excess of a staggering £610 million! The last film from the series will be the first film in the franchise to reach the $1 billion sales mark. Previously the best global figure was $974.8 million for the first movie release back in 2001 – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Experts say that the figure is not all that it seems as we must take into account the higher ticket admission prices which has bumped up the overall sales figure meaning that the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has not actually caught up to Philosopher’s Stone in terms of the number of tickets sold.

So which film holds the number one spot as the biggest grossing movie of all time? Avatar! The innovative 3D film from legendary director James Cameron holds the record at a whopping $2.8 billion. The 2009 smash was an instant success and despite the hype around the new Harry Potter movie, it certainly has some catching up to do as Cameron also holds the number 2 spot with Titanic, which brought in $1.8 billion.
