We all like a bit of humour here at Ace Fancy Dress, it makes the day go by in a lighthearted fashion! With all the mod cons within the social networking world, we’re constantly trying to find humorous antidotes to add to our Facebook and Twitter feeds just to help you through the day! With Halloween been and gone we’ve got to say that one of our most amusing Facebook posts for Halloween was our rather rude Halloween pumpkin post.

We thought that with the colder weather setting in at the end of October and to end a successful Halloween season, our many Facebook fans would like a cheap laugh. So here it is – this cheeky little post made us all smile:

Last Thursday night we were blown away by “Rick Stein’s Spain”episode, so much so we’re attempting to make this today for the staff’s lunch tomorrow.

Cuttlefish with meatballs and peas

Ingredients

For the picada

1 small vine-ripened or beef tomato, halved

2 tbsp olive oil

2 fat garlic cloves, peeled but left whole

10g/¼oz crustless white bread

10g/¼oz blanched almonds, toasted

1 tsp flat-leaf parsley leaves

For the cuttlefish and meatballs

1 large vine-ripened or beef tomato (about 200g/7oz), halved

6 tbsp olive oil

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 medium onion, finely chopped

6 tbsp dry white wine

2 tsp tomato purée

15g/½oz slice crustless white bread

1½ tbsp milk

2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

225g/8oz chicken mince

225g/8oz pork mince

pinch freshly grated nutmeg

6 large shell-on raw prawns

375g/13oz cleaned cuttlefish, cut into 2cm-wide strips

150ml/5fl oz chicken stock

100g/3½oz peas

salt and freshly ground black pepper

crusty fresh bread, to serve

Preparation method

For the picada, grate the halved tomatoes, pressing the fleshy, cut face of the tomato against the grater. (As you grate each tomato half, the skin will flatten out and be left behind.) Discard the skin.

Heat the olive oil in a small frying pan over a medium heat. Add the garlic cloves and slice of bread and fry, turning over now and then, until golden-brown. Lift out with a slotted spoon and add to the bowl of a mini food processor with the almonds, tomato, parsley and one tablespoon of cold water. Blend to a paste and set aside.

For the cuttlefish and meatballs, grate the halved tomatoes, pressing the fleshy, cut face of the tomato against the grater. (As you grate each tomato half, the skin will flatten out and be left behind.) Discard the skin.

Put two tablespoons of the oil, half the garlic and the onion into a saucepan and fry for 10 minutes until soft, sweet and lightly golden. Add the wine, grated tomato and tomato purée and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 6-7 minutes until reduced and thickened.

For the meatballs, tear the bread into a small bowl, sprinkle with the milk and leave until soft. Break up the bread with your fingers and add the remaining chopped garlic, the parsley, chicken and pork mince, nutmeg and ½ teaspoon each of salt and black pepper.

Mix together well and shape into 2.5cm/1in wide balls.

Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a frying pan, add the meatballs and fry for 3-4 minutes, shaking the pan every now and then, until golden-brown. (You may need to do this in batches.) Set aside on a plate. Discard any oil left in the pan.

Heat another tablespoon of oil in the pan, add the prawns and fry for one minute on each side until just cooked through. Set aside on a plate. Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan, then the cuttlefish and stir-fry for two minutes or until it is nicely caramelized and just cooked through. Set aside with the prawns.

Add the tomato sauce to the pan, stir in the picada and simmer for two minutes. Reduce the heat to medium, stir in the stock or water and bring to the boil, stirring. Add the peas, meatballs and cuttlefish and season to taste with salt and pepper. Scatter over the prawns and simmer for five minutes until any remaining liquid has reduced and everything has heated through.

Serve with crusty fresh bread.

4 meringues

What a week of traditional English weather we’ve had this week with intermittent light showers and heavy downpours spread all over the UK. So far Glastonbury has turned into a mud bath with pictures of people caked in mud and the Wimbledon court cover men have been busier than ever constantly adding and removing the waterproof covers! So we’re hoping that this weekend brings some nice weather so the tennis fans all over the UK can relax to the biggest Grand Slam tennis tournament in the world! So without further ado here’s what our friends at the met office and BBC are predicting for this weekends weather forecast:

Outlook for Saturday to Monday According To The BBC
Rain for many on Saturday. Rain in the northwest on Sunday but drier, brighter elsewhere and increasingly warm towards the southeast. Mainly dry on Monday, very warm in the southeast.

Ingredients

500g strawberries , hulled halved or quartered, depending on size
3 tbsp Cointreau
zest 1 orange
4 tbsp icing sugar
mint leaves, roughly torn, to serve

Method

Tip the strawberries into a large bowl. Splash over the Cointreau, add the orange zest and sift in the icing sugar, then give everything a really good mix. Cover, then leave for 1 hr or more for the juices to become syrupy and the strawberries to soak up some of the alcohol.

To serve, scatter the mint leaves over the strawberries and give them one more good stir, then spoon into individual glass dishes.

The weekend draws ever closer! Loads going on in the fancy dress game next week, stay tuned to the blog…

There’s nothing better than a long lazy Sunday and the staff here at Ace Fancy Dress have got quite good and being lazy on a Sunday! We like to indulge in all sorts of activities and speaking to our product development manager Olivia she was kind enough to let us in on her Sunday routine:

1. Full English breakfast to help cure sore heads
2. A trip to the shop to pick up the Sunday papers
3. Walk in the country fields with dog “Millie”
4. Sunday Roast served at 7pm
5. Sunday night film

Not a bad routine that Olivia has got going on and personally we like the ritual of sitting down to watch a Sunday night film. Tonight there are some fantastic films on the box that you can’t miss! Here’s our breakdown:

9pm Channel 4 : “Role Models”

Plot Summary

Danny and Wheeler, well into their 30s, lack something: Danny feels stuck; he’s sour and has driven away his terrific girlfriend. Wheeler chases any skirt he sees for empty sex. When they get in a fight with a tow-truck driver, they choose community service over jail and are assigned to be big brothers – Danny to Augie, a geek who loves participating in a weekend Medieval reenactment society, and Wheeler to Ronnie, a pint-size foul-mouthed kid. After a rocky start, things start to go well until both Danny and Wheeler make big mistakes. Can the two men figure out how to change enough to be role models to the boys?

10pm Channel 5 “Rambo”

Plot Summary

Vietnam veteran John Rambo has survived many harrowing ordeals in his lifetime and has since withdrawn into a simple and secluded existence in Thailand, where he spends his time capturing snakes for local entertainers, and chauffeuring locals in his old PT boat. Even though he is looking to avoid trouble, trouble has a way of finding him: a group of Christian human rights missionaries, led by Michael Burnett and Sarah Miller, approach Rambo with the desire to rent his boat to travel up the river to Burma. For over fifty years, Burma has been a war zone. The Karen people of the region, who consist of peasants and farmers, have endured brutally oppressive rule from the murderous Burmese military and have been struggling for survival every single day. After some inner contemplation, Rambo accepts the offer and takes Michael, Sarah, and the rest of the missionaries up the river. When the missionaries finally arrive at the Karen village, they find themselves part of a raid by the sadistic Major Pa Tee Tint and a slew of Burmese army men. A portion of the villagers and missionaries are tortured and viciously murdered, while Tint and his men hold the remainder captive. Concerned by their disappearance, the minister in charge of the mission gathers a group of mercenaries and pleas Rambo transport them with his boat, since he knows their last exact location. But Rambo can’t stay behind: he joins the team where he belongs, to liberate the survivors from the clutches of Major Tint in what may be one of his deadliest missions ever!

So it looks like you might have a tough choice between the two films! Oh well if you decide to go for the Rambo film we guarantee that you will be inspired after the film to dress up in some army fancy dress. You know who supplies the best army outfits in the UK right?

Good morning everyone and we would like to say a massive HAPPY EASTER to everyone! We hope you have been enjoying the ongoing bank holidays and have a nice day planned eating fine foods and spending time with family! For those of you that read our blog will know we like to try and offer not just fancy dress information but also other stuff of interest. So let’s ask what exactly is Easter all about?

Easter is very much embedded in Christian culture and is celebrated largely by Roman Catholics and is all about the death of Jesus and the day that he rose again. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day of his crucifixion and his resurrection is celebrated on Easter Sunday. Easter is also the celebration of the end of lent which is a ritual practiced by Christians which involves praying and fasting for a period of 40 days to mark the sacrifices that Jesus gave up for us.

So:

40 days before Easter Sunday = Lent

Good Friday = Crucifixion of Jesus

Easter Sunday = The day Jesus resurrected from the dead

Here’s an Easter reading:

“Lord Jesus, I want to know You personally.
Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins.
I open the door of my life to You and ask you to come in
as my Savior and Lord. Take control of my life.
Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life.
Make me the kind of person You want me to be. Amen.”
