It has been another successful year with sales growth being seen for various new lines including our fantastic selection of Halloween accessories.

Our temporary staff once again picked up their new roles extremely quickly making it easier than ever to get the large volume of orders out the door! One of our regular warehouse workers Ryan even wore a pedometer for a day to discover how much exercise he was doing per day and was more than surprised to find that he was walking 7 miles a day – who needs a gym membership eh?!

Popular selling lines this year include our range of sexy Halloween costumes, Morphsuits and Halloween accessories.

In true Halloween style even the celebrities where out in force at Heidi Klum’s celebrity bash with Heidi Klum taking the accolade for best Halloween costume. Carving a pumpkin and leaving it out on Halloween evening is one of the long standing traditions of Halloween. It’s a fun activity for both children and adults and is the perfect way to enter into the spirit of Halloween at very little cost. Below you will find our step by step guide to carving a fantastic Halloween pumpkin!

Steps

> There are loads of outlets that sell seasonal pumpkins especially the major supermarkets so there’s plenty of choice, which should allow you find the perfect sized pumpkin. First off you need to pick your pumpkin – make sure you have the right size and shape suited to where it will sit once decorated!

pumpkin Method For Carving A Pumpkin

> Next draw a circular or hexagonal shape on the top of your pumpkin in preparation for making a large opening big enough to fit your hand through which will enable you to gut out the flesh later.

la102021 1006 cut01 xl Method For Carving A Pumpkin

> Using a sharp knife cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along the outline you have made. It’s important to use a sharp knife as you will find the skin is tough to cut through and using a sharp knife will help avoid accidents.

> Remove the stem which will act as a cap, making sure you scrape off any excess pulp. The newly formed “head” of the pumpkin you have created should easily lift off and enable you to scoop out the flesh.

> Find a large spoon and proceed to scoop out the flesh and seeds from the pumpkin. Don’t forget if you’re a foodie then keep the flesh for later as it can used to make a wonderful soup perfect for serving on October 31st!

> The next part is where the skill comes in, as you will have to design and implement a Halloween themed design on your pumpkin. First of all draw your design on the pumpkin face using a thin felt tip pen or thick pencil. Remember, entrecote detailing on a pumpkin is difficult as cutting through the tough skin takes time so try not to get too adventurous.

> Follow your pattern being careful not to cut towards you using preferably two different size blades – one small for entrecote details and one big for features such as the nose, mouth and eyes.

carve Method For Carving A Pumpkin

> Push through the cut out features from the inside of the pumpkin.

> Last of all place a candle inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow and place somewhere where you can show it off!

In many ways you’re stepping into the unknown as you can never be certain that the lines you choose will be top sellers. Our buying team here at Ace Fancy Dress have a massive responsibility during the process of finding and buying new lines and have to be very astute when it comes to the process – first they have to research the market place, always on the lookout for new suppliers. Morphsuits go down a storm pretty much anywhere from festivals to football games, fundraisers to frat parties, Halloween to Happy Birthdays, batchelor/stags/bucks to bungee jumps, or for just picking up some milk and bread from your local supermarket.

Halloween is a time not just for fantastic costumes but eating Halloween themed food. Many people like to supply Halloween food such as pumpkin shaped biscuits and pumpkin soup, which is a great way to get a party started. Here’s a genuinely tasty recipe ideal for serving at Halloween, which is a great twist on the Italian classic lasagna!

What you need

1 squash, weighing around 1kg chopped into big chunks
2 tbsp olive oil (and maybe some more for cooking)
200ml crème fraîche
50g Parmesan , finely grated and a pinch of cheddar
250g tub ricotta
Small bunch of sage leaves, half chopped, half left whole
12 sheets of dried lasagne
Fresh rosemary chopped
Carrots chopped into 1.5cm chunks
Lug of white wine (optional)

Instructions For Cooking

Heat the oven to 220C. Mix your chunky pieces of squash, carrots, white wine together with the olive oil in a roasting tin and put in the oven for a speedy half an hour roasting. Time to think about your cheat easy white sauce by mixing the crème fraiche with the Parmesan and cheddar in a bowl. Combine these ingredients until you have a smooth consistency and leave to one side.

When the squash is golden brown and of a softer feel, take it out of the oven and leave to stand until cooled. When the squash has cooled down enough to be able to handle, peel the skin away from the soft flesh. In a separate bowl, beat the ricotta with the chopped sage, rosemary and remaining Parmesan and mix with the squash. Finish with a little seasoning.

Now this is where your lasagna preparation skills come in handy. Grab an oven dish big/deep enough for four sheets of pasta. Lay 4 sheets of the pasta over and add some of the ricotta and squash mix over the pasta with more crème fraîche. Use all the ricotta mix to fill the bake, but keep enough crème fraîche to add as the topping to the bake and repeat in layers until you have used up all the pasta sheets. Finally, spread the crème fraîche over the top layer of lasagna, and then scatter with the whole sage leaves. Put the dish back in the oven for around 25 minutes until the top is golden and crispy and then serve with a salad garnish!

As Halloween rapidly approaches, we thought we would share a favourite Halloween recipe passed down by office manager Olivia’s Mum. If you’re having a Halloween themed party, give this recipe a try as it always goes down really well!

Halloween Pumpkin Soup Recipe

pumpkin%20soup%20(2) Halloween Pumpkin Soup Recipe

Ingredients

• 5 tbsp olive oil or more if required

• 2 onions finely diced

• 1kg pumpkins or squash peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks

• 700ml stock (either chicken or vegetable)

• 140ml pot double cream (you can use less or more as desired)

• Handful of pumpkin seeds

• Sea salt and black pepper for seasoning

• 1 Lemon squeezed for juice

• 2 cloves of garlic

• Crusty bread cut into thick slices

• 3 slices of wholemeal bread for croutons

Cooking Steps

1. Heat a large saucepan until hot and then add the olive oil, add the garlic and onions and cook until soft. Add the pumpkin or squash contents and cook at a simmering heat for 9-10 minutes. Make sure you keep an eye on it, as it will require constant stirring.

2. Once the mix looks like it has gained some thickness pour in the stock and season with the salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, and then turn the heat right down to a simmer for around 10 minutes – you want the mixture to become soft. Once it’s soft pour the cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée the mixture with a blender.

3. While the soup is cooking, slice the crusts from the wholemeal bread and then cut the bread into small croutons. Heat any left over olive oil in a frying pan and fry the bread until it gains a croutons crispness. Add the seeds to the pan and cook for a few minutes more until they are toasted. Once the soup has cooked through and has a nice consistency serve your soup in a large white bowl. Drizzle over some of the lemon juice and serve with the crusty bread. Happy Halloween!
