Super Bowl XLVI Sunday Evening

February 3rd, 2012

Good day fancy dress people, we hope that you have had a good weekend and are looking forward to the weekend. The sports fans out there can enjoy this years Super Bowl on Sunday evening between New England Patriots & New York Giants. For anyone that knows very little about the teams here’s some information taken from Wikipedia:

 Super Bowl XLVI Sunday Evening

The New England Patriots, commonly called the “Pats,” are a professional football team based in the Greater Boston area, playing their home games in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts at Gillette Stadium. The team is part of the East Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971, although Foxborough is a suburb of Boston, 22 miles (35 km) away.
(Wiki link)

The New York Giants are a professional American football team based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, representing the New York City metropolitan area. The Giants are currently members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team plays its home games in East Rutherford, New Jersey at MetLife Stadium, which it shares with the New York Jets in a unique arrangement.
(Wiki link).

The major sporting event seems to get bigger every year with last years Super Bowl gaining over 111 million American viewers and this year we expect no different. The New York Giants are likely to be underdogs with the our friends from Sky Bet giving the following odds:

Sky Bet Odds (Accurate as 03/02/12)
+3 NY Giants 4/5 -3 New England 21/20

To further hinder these odds Rob Gronkowski has now been confirmed as available for the game by head coach Bill Belichick:
“I think he was OK this morning, I don’t think we had any setbacks and we’ll see how he goes out there today, but Rob’s worked extremely hard, he’s had treatment morning noon and night and he’s got better on a daily basis.

“Hopefully he’ll be able to continue that progress today, tomorrow and all day Sunday and see where that takes us, but I think that he’s coming along. We’ll see where he gets to but certainly moving in the right direction, he’s getting better on a daily basis.”

We can’t wait for this game here at Ace Fancy Dress HQ and will certainly be tuning in this Sunday evening and will therefore be bleary eyed on Monday morning! This week we have seen some of American football costumes and cheerleader outfits selling well and we’re guessing these are being worn at Super Bowl themed parties. So don’t forget people Superbowl this weekend – it’s going to be a winner!

Ideas for Valentines’s Day

February 1st, 2012

February has arrived and we all know what that means – only 14 days until Valentines Day and this year we’re in the mood for love! According to the powerhouse website for definitions, Wikipedia, Valentines Day is:

simpleredloveheart Ideas for Valentiness Day

Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day,[1][2][3] is a holiday observed on February 14 honouring one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).[1][3] The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. It was first established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD, and was later deleted from the General Roman Calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI.

Modern Valentine’s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.[4]

For many men, thinking of ways to romance the special person in your life is difficult and doing it incorrectly with little va va voom can leave you out in the dogg house! With all this in mind, here’s our top 5 ways to woo your woman this Valentines day:

1. Show your creative side: Women love nothing more than when their partner puts real effort into a gift idea or gesture. One great way to do this to get in touch with your creative side by perhaps writing a poem, framing a photo or making her a CD of her favourite songs. Better still make her a mushy CD of all her favourite love songs!

2. Get the vacuum out: Some people are messier than others but if you’re notorious within your relationship for being lazy or messy clearing up the house will speak volumes. A simple but effective way to get in the good books is to carry out a thorough spring clean. Go one further and run your partner a hot bath ready for when she gets in from work!

3. “Surprise”: Taking your partner by surprise in our opinion is still one of the best ways to be romantic. We have all heard the stories such as engagement rings being laced in cakes and by taking her by surprise you’re going to make her feel special in a way that should resonate for a long time after the initial surprise. Get your thinking caps on fellas…

4. Write a Valentines card: Almost every romantic couple exchange Valentines cards on February 14th. One great way to exchange is to make her think that you’ve forgotten and rather than give it to her directly put it somewhere where she will find it for example slip it in her pocket or handbag!

5. Show off your culinary skills: Every woman loves a man that can cook and a simple night in with a romantic meal is all you need to score some more points. Here’s a fantastic slow cook recipe to try out this year:

Slow-cooked lamb with onions & thyme
1826 MEDIUM Ideas for Valentiness Day

- half a leg of lamb (about 1.25kg/2lb 12oz)
- 1kg onions (about 4 large ones)
- handful of thyme sprigs
- 300ml red wine
- large handful parsley

Method

Firstly, prepare the lamb. Heat oven to 160C/fan140C/gas 3. Wipe the meat all over and season well. Heat 3 tbsp of olive oil in a large heavy flameproof casserole, add the meat and fry all over on a fairly high heat for about 8 mins, turning until it is evenly well browned. Remove to a plate.

Thinly slice the onions. Add to the pan and fry for about 10 mins, until softened and tinged with brown. Add a few of the thyme sprigs and cook for a further minute or so. Season with salt and pepper.

Sit the lamb on top of the onions, and then add the wine. Cover tightly. Bake for 3 hrs. You can make to this stage up to 2 days in advance, and then reheat for 45 mins.
To finish off, strip the leaves from 2 thyme sprigs and chop them with the parsley. Scatter over before serving. For full recipe and more ideas check the BBC good food website.

National TV Awards 2012

January 26th, 2012

Last night London played host to the Annual TV Awards where the UK’s TV stars came out in force to in attempt to pick up awards for their hard work on screen over the past year. There were some surprises last night with the cast and producers of Coronation Street beating their rivals EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks to the prize for best serial drama. Despite X Factors drop in ratings last year, X-Factor still managed to pull an award out the bag winning the award for Best Talent Show. Following last years dip in viewing figures loosing out to BBC’s hit show Strictly Come Dancing, Simon Cowell announced yesterday that he has team up with Hollywood A Lister Will Smith and his wife Jada Koren Pinkett Smith for a new talent show that looks for the very best music DJ’s. In Simon Cowell’s absence last night X Factor judge Tulisa accepted the award and we thinks it’s safe to say that she wasn’t disappointed.

Check out the following image and video from last night’s ceremony:

Chinese New Year 2012

January 24th, 2012

Chinese New Year is one of the most important traditions within the Chinese calendar and was celebrated yesterday and will run to February 6th. In China, it’s known as “Spring Festival” and marks the end of the long winter season and celebrates the passing of another year. The festival begins on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day and is celebrated by Chinese families who get together for their annual dinner which they refer to as “Eve of the Passing Year.” Ask any Chinese person and they will tell you that Chinese New Year is the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar with the majority of Chinese businesses closing down. Similarly ask a UK importer who imports stock from China and they will tell you that doing business during the new year period is a no go as factories are closed for the duration. In a nut shell, Chinese New Year is to Chinese people what Christmas is to English people!

Many Chinese communities across the USA came together yesterday to bring in the new year in traditional style by lighting herds of fire crackers which is a tradition designed to ward off evil spirits – New York’s Chinatown set off over 600,000 rounds of firecrackers to bring in their celebrations!

This Week – Muhammad Ali’s 70th Birthday

January 19th, 2012

This week, boxing legend Muhammad Ali celebrated his 70th birthday in front of a lively crowd in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky at the Muhammad Ali Centre. Ali was with his wife Lonnie and sister-in law, who greeted well wishers from a balcony overlooking the main crowd. The crowd sang him happy birthday and then chanted his name like days of old at ringside “Ali Ali Ali…”! Check out this video taken by one of the crowd:

Talking to BBC sport, former United States president Bill Clinton paid tribute to Ali talking about the courage and mental strength that he has shown throughout his career.

“He made it (boxing) part theatre, part dance and all power. He was really something unique,”

“And then when he risked it all to oppose the Vietnam War, in a funny way it could have destroyed him.

“But it didn’t because people realised he had been very forthright and he was prepared to pay the price for his convictions.

“He could say ‘I’m not mouthing off about this, this is the way I’m prepared to live and prepared to pay whatever the consequences are for standing up for what I believe in’.

“That, over the long run, made him even more fans. It’s that kind of courage which he has manifested for as long as I’ve known him, and in dealing with his own illness.

“It took a sack full of guts to carry that Olympic flame up that ramp the last distance with his hands shaking in 1996 (in Atlanta), but he did it.

“And it’s taken a lot of courage to continue to go out, to be seen, he wasn’t self conscious. He’s something special.

“One day when were together it hit me – and we have spent lots of time together over the last several years – the courage he has showed, as an older man.

“Struggling with Parkinsons he has shown a different kind of, and perhaps a greater courage than he showed as a young man risking having his body, face and brain battered by the shock of boxing.”

Nicknamed “The Greatest,” Ali is known for many historic bouts with the most famous being one fight with rival Joe Frazier and another with boxing legend George Foreman, where he finally regained his stripped titles seven years later.

Golden Globes 2012

January 17th, 2012

The Beverly Hilton hotel played host to Sunday evenings Golden Globe ceremony in Hollywood, hosted by the UK’s very own Ricky Gervais. Following a rather crude performance by Gervais in his last hosting of the ceremony a year ago, critics watched on with baited breath to see how the comedian would respond this year and we think it’s fair to say that we got much of the same but perhaps a more toned down version. Just five minutes into the show Gervais joked about the size of his manhood, the length of Kim Kardashian’s marriage and made some unusual comments about Jodie’s “Beaver”, including a few other gags aimed towards Mel Gibson and Eddie Murphy.

LA Times writer Mary McNamara said: ‘Despite all his tough talk leading to Sunday night’s broadcast, it was a markedly respectful and restrained Ricky Gervais who showed up to host this year’s Golden Globes, leaving one to wonder why he bothered to take the gig at all (except for the money, of course).’

This year’s big winner was French film “The Artist” written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius staring Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Millerwhich which scooped three Golden Globe awards. The film is set in 1927, and is about a suave, moustachioed matinee idol George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. He’s dashing, he’s just a little arrogant, and his romantic swashbucklers have women swooning. But silent movies are about to be washed away by new-fangled talkies. When studio boss Zimmer (John Goodman) offers him a chance to steal a march on his rivals in this exciting new format, Valentin rejects it out of hand in favour of his own epic silent project. Alas, this proves to be a flop. But as Valentin’s life falls apart and his star wanes, the young actress whose career he nurtured, Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), finds hers in the ascendant. The film hits UK cinemas on Friday the 20th January.

BB Eviction Tonight 9pm

January 13th, 2012

Well, we’re one week into Big Brother and as you would expect there has been some twists, turns and of course some good old fashioned backstabbing which Big Brother has used to their sinister advantage. Wednesday saw Ace Fancy Dress favourite Andrew Stone evicted from the house which is rather disappointing seeing as he offers the viewers at home pure “TV gold”, what’s wrong with the voting public, surely we need to keep the big characters in the house?

CBB 2012 Andrew Stone evicted BB Eviction Tonight 9pm

Andrew bows like a media king!

In a post eviction interview with the Mirror Andrew commented that eviction competitor Georgia is “being eaten alive” by the other housemates:

“Georgia is an amazing looking girl but she’s totally out of her depth with all the stars in there. She’s too boring and she’s allowing herself to get eaten alive by the other contestants. She needs to liven up.

“My worry for her is that rather than Big Brother being a great career move it could end up being a disaster. In the outside world maybe she can hide behind her laptop or mobile phone and glide through social situations.

“But in the house there is none of that – you can only rely on your personality”.
(Full story).

Upon Andrews departure and to Georgia’s surprise, she then had to nominate two other housemates to face the public vote this evening. At first, Georgia located in the diary room, who was being watched by her housemates on a big screen, refused to vote, saying: “I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t. I feel like I’m going to cry, I’ve just got saved and now I have to do that? “No, don’t make me do it. I can’t even think of anyone in my head”? But after being pressed by Big Brother she released the two names of Natasha and Nicola, both of which Georgia has had minor spats with.

In true Big Brother style, this week followed a “fairytale” theme where housemates had to become classic fairytale characters. Prettier than pretty (apparently), Kristina who attended the diary room first, automatically became Goldilocks who then had to choose the roles for her fellow housemates. Housemates were provided with some awesome fairytale themed costumes to carry out their roles and playmate Kristina donned our very own sexy Lady Goldilocks costume. The outfit she wore is a great seller here at Ace Fancy Dress and includes full dress with bear detail.

There has been plenty of flirting with the boys hitting on the girls and it would appear that the traditional backstabbing of Big Brother has already begun with some people talking fowl of K and K and the legend that is Andrew Stone. Following suit, the first nominations have taken place with Georgia and Andrew being nominated for the first week of evictions. Big Brother is of course no stranger to fancy dress and when it comes to the most colourful and outlandish costumes they certainly take the biscuit. So far we have seen the housemates dress in skin tight cat suits and paint themselves in full body paints.

Over the years we have seen every sort of costume under the sun – animal costumes, pirate outfits, cave girl costumes the lot! This year we’re predicting that we will see the appearance of some 80s fancy dress on the show. The 80s fancy dress theme is still one of the most popular costume themes at parties all over the UK and as a result we’re extended our 80s costume section to bring you the very best in 80s dressing up online. Weekend FA CUP Time

January 6th, 2012

Hello costume people, we hope you’re doing well and looking forward to the first weekend of 2012! It has been a while since we posted a sports related blog post and with a full weekend of FA cup fixtures we thought we would fill you in on this weekends fixtures and gossip.

The FA cup games begin tonight with Liverpool taking on Oldham at Anfield with kick off scheduled for 20:00. With all the recent controversy surrounding Luis Suarez and his ban after being found guilty of racial abuse against Patrice Evra, Liverpool will be looking to gain some momentum ahead of tonight’s game with a solid win.

It would appear that the saga has had some after affects as the PFA have come out saying that they will look to introduce cultural awareness sessions for footballers who are unfamiliar with local culture – the basis being that the dialect that Suarez used was common in his homeland. According to a BBC interview, PFA chief Bobby Barnes said:

“This is something we are seriously looking into. It’s very important,”

“Players need to be aware of what is and isn’t acceptable. These sessions have certainly benefited scholars.”

“It’s very important that players, especially foreign players, are aware of cultural differences and of the different buttons that will upset people in our leagues,”

“It’s down to the clubs and ourselves to educate players about this.”

Not a bad idea as they’re so many different different cultures amongst the elite of the Premier League you could understand how something like this would occur. With all that aside here’s the other remaining fixtures for this weekends FA cup games:
